How Laboratory Purity Testing Works

An accessible overview of the analytical methods laboratories use to characterize identity and purity.

What analytical testing measures

Analytical testing aims to answer two basic questions about a material: is it what it claims to be (identity), and how much of it is the intended substance versus impurities (purity)?

Different instruments answer these questions in different ways. Techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry are commonly used in peptide characterization.

Identity versus purity

Identity testing confirms the material matches the expected structure. Purity testing quantifies how much of the sample is the intended compound. A responsible report states both the method used and the result obtained.

A number on its own means little without context. That is why a credible Certificate of Analysis describes how a result was produced, not just the figure.

What testing does not tell you

Purity is a measure of composition, not of safety or suitability for any particular use. A high purity figure describes the material — it does not establish that a compound is safe, effective, or approved for anything.
